Jambo, habari?

Now, your visit to Kenya is close and may want to already get used to greetings. Hello how are you? -"Mzuri sana!" -" I am well " should be your answer.

Swahili is spoken all over Kenya and it is not too difficult to learn. You could memorise a few words and some short sentences. Any time during day or night you might be greeted with a cheerful "Jambo" you answer will be "Jambo sana". This for sure will create a smile on the person's face vis-à-vis.

But do not worry, most Kenyans also speak English.

You have decided to visit the tropics. This naturally requires some preparation. If you have already travelled to other tropical countries, you will have your own experiences.

For others here some guidance:

- Your clothes should be airy and consist of cotton or linen. If you do not intend to leave the coastal area for a trip upcountry, you can leave your warm sweaters safely at home. At the coast the temperature will not fall under 23 degrees Celsius (at night), even during the cool months.

-In some restaurants at dinner time long trousers are compulsory for gentlemen.

- I take it you intend to have some excursions into the near bush. For that reason some firm closed shoes are recommended, also long trousers will give some protection against thorns.

- A first aid kit intended for overseas travels should be part of your equipment. Insect repel-lents like Autan and an ointment for the treatment of insect bites and a disinfectant should be included.

-Vaccinations are not compulsory by law in Kenya but e.g. Yellow fever is recommended, a malaria prophylactics is required.

Once you have decided to travel in any case consult your house or family doctor or even a specialist for tropical illnesses to also profit from latest medical knowledge.

What is there to discover? Excursions!

You make the most beautiful and most pleasant animal observations (different monkey, birds and reptiles) within the place itself just by simply waiting for the animals to appear. Who however likes to make excursions outside, has ample opportunity to do so. Please get infor-mation at Boko-Boko.

It is unlawful to export animals, plants as well as shells from Kenya !!!

Besides following could be done:

... Just to relax in Boko-Boko
... in Mombasa to visit the old Fort Jesus,
... in Mombasa to see the Ngomongo Village,
... in Gede to visit the ruins of an age old village,
... to eat crocodile meat at Mamba Village, the largest crocodile farm in Africa
... to walk the Bamburi Nature Trail between antelopes and giraffes,
... to rent a car ( according to my own experience Glory Car is the most favourable one, their office is in the Diani Shopping Centre)
... to make some trips to discover the surroundings
... to make a day safari to the big game in the Shimba Hills National Reserve
... to make a drive to the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary
... to make a safari for a few days to one of the numerous other national parks with an unfor-gettable overnight stay in one of the comfortable lodges.

Africa, a fascinating continent crossed by the equator. Tropical climate, dry savannah, desert-like areas. But also snow-covered mountains, fascinating big game, jungle, dreamlike beaches, turquoise blue water. Meet friendly people with their unique culture and century old traditions.

All this can be attributed to Africa and is particularly true for Kenya with its unique variety of big game.

Medicial care:
In Kenya the medical provision is sufficiently guaranteed in most areas. There are doctors and hospitals for all medical fields. Nevertheless charges must be settled in cash. It is advis-able for all such vacations to have a travel insurance.
There are pharmacies in all larger places.

Swimming
Swimming in the sea is possible throughout the year. The water temperature is never lower then 22 degrees Celsius. But do not swim in inland waters and lakes because of the danger of worm related illnesses. Besides many lakes and rivers are "inhabited" by crocodiles and hip-popotami.
